everybody MYHEALTH, with Barbara Docherty
Welcome to the MYHEALTH column

Hi, I’m Barbara Docherty. You can read MYHEALTH every week in the Sunday News, or catch up with it online whenever it suits you, at the bottom of this page. I hope you'll take something from my experiences of nursing, research and hearing other people’s health stories – from Auckland to the Chathams.
The main message, and where I am coming from, is you can take charge of looking after your health and assist family and friends to be responsible for their health too. Most ailments we suffer from can be avoided or remedied by taking control of the things that affect our health and wellbeing.
That’s not to say there’s not also a time to head straight to your doctor or hospital, particularly with children. In fact, this is also another important form of taking control of your health, by not letting things slide and become worse. Putting off going to the doctor can also be a sure-fire way to let small concerns become irrational fears.
Small steps towards a healthier life can soon add up for you!
