Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand
WHO WE ARE
The Melanoma Foundation of New Zealand is a registered charitable trust devoted to issues relating to melanoma. The Foundation was incorporated as a charitable trust in New Zealand in August 2004.
Our mission is to create excellence in the awareness, education, prevention, treatment and research of melanoma in New Zealand.
ABOUT MELANOMA
Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. Melanoma can spread rapidly and can be life-threatening if left untreated.
New Zealand and Australia have the highest melanoma incidence rates in the world. Melanoma is the fourth most common cancer in New Zealand, with about 2000 cases a year.
OUR GOALS
Our goals are to:
- improve the outcome of persons with melanoma
- increase awareness and education of melanoma in New Zealand
- improve communication between New Zealand workers in all areas related to melanoma.
WHAT WE DO
- Public information meetings - the Foundation organises meetings throughout the country for people affected by melanoma, their family, friends or anyone who is interested in melanoma issues.
- Newsletters – regular newsletters about melanoma issues for supporters.
- Provide information about melanoma, including Frequently Asked Questions, on our website (below).
- Raise funds - to promote awareness of melanoma within New Zealand.
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES
Examples of other activities undertaken:
- 2008 Melanoma summit - The Foundation played a role in initiating and helping to organise the first ever Melanoma Summit held in Wellington in November 2008. The summit was designed to bring together everyone involved in melanoma in New Zealand.
- 2010 Melanoma March – Major awareness campaign with events in Auckland, Tauranga and Wellington.
