OUR MISSION STATEMENT
"To improve the health and well being of all New Zealanders by eliminating disease and premature death due to tobacco."
ASH aims to reduce smoking in New Zealand by:
- educating the public about the harmful effects of active and passive smoking on health
- supporting and encouraging relevant legislation for the benefit of the community, eg, the Smoke-free Environments Act 1990
- all other lawful means.
OUR SERVICES
Education/Information/Advisory Service
ASH provides an information service to health promotion and education providers, policy makers, politicians, media, students, community groups and members of the public on issues relating to tobacco and public health, including information on prevalence and consumption health consequences, Smoke-free Environments Act and passive smoking, smoking in the workplace, smoking in pregnancy, advertising, Maori health. overseas developments and strategies for control. This includes dissemination by way of the following:
- verbal advice/telephone
- letters
- forwarding of relevant press clippings
- provision of statistics and pamphlets and other relevant material
- Smokefree Times.
Liaison/Advocacy Service
ASH liaises with government and private health agencies, Members of Parliament, political parties, the media and any other appropriate organisations to raise public awareness of tobacco related issues and developments. This includes press releases, radio and television interviews.
OUR RESOURCES
ASH operates a resource centre for all tobacco-related issues. this includes a subscription to a weekly press clipping service, New Zealand and overseas journals and newsletters.
