La Leche League New Zealand
OUR MISSION
To help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother.
OUR ORGANISATION
La Leche League New Zealand is a nationwide, voluntary, non-profit organisation, set up in New Zealand in 1964 and affiliated to La Leche league International, the world's foremost authority on breastfeeding. There are around 50 Groups and almost 140 Leaders throughout New Zealand.
OUR WORK
- Breastfeeding information and support through monthly meetings and telephone counselling. A series of four meetings, run throughout the year, covers such topics as the advantages of breastfeeding, pregnancy and childbirth, getting breastfeeding off to a good start, common breastfeeding problems, parenting, nutrition and weaning.
- Mother-to-mother help. LLL Leaders do not give medical advice but have access to LLLNZ's Board of Consultants. These health professionals and scientists have a special interest in breastfeeding and in all LLL activities.
- An extensive range of the latest books and leaflets on breastfeeding, childbirth, nutrition and parenting. These are available on loan through Group libraries or can be purchased from the LLLNZ National Office.
- Speakers for antenatal classes and health professional training.
- Conferences and workshops for parents, health professionals and others interested in breastfeeding.
