PURPOSE OF ORGANISATION

  • To provide burn injured persons and their families throughout the Waikato with support and assistance during and after hospitalisation and assist them to return to normal lives within their community.
  • To undertake meaningful burn prevention programmes in school and communities.
  • To liaise with and support initiatives by other organisations within New Zealand linked to the activities of the Waikato Burn Support Charitable Trust.

BACKGROUND

Waikato Burn Support was established in 1989 and formed into a Trust in April 1999. We are a 100% voluntary organisation with membership by nomination and run by an elected Board.

ACTIVITIES

  • Hospital ward and clinic visiting
  • Burn awareness programme
  • Public displays
  • Burn prevention programmes in schools
  • Burn prevention programmes in retirement homes
  • Family and individual support for burn survivors
  • Seminars and talks to groups, schools, polytechnics and organisations.

PROGRAMME

Our voluntary, full-time Burn Prevention Education Officer runs a full programme of Burn Prevention Education programmes sponsored and approved by the Ministry of Health, which includes public speaking in schools and organisations throughout the region. We are in voluntary co-operation with all other Burn Support groups throughout the country and maintain links with related international bodies and organisations.

Our services are available to all burn survivors and their caregivers both past and present. We present the burn prevention message widely throughout the Waikato and occasionally further afield.

Our retired founding Field Officer still works tirelessly in support of burn survivors and has received a QSM in recognition of her work in this area. She still responds to invitations and has developed a national profile among burn prevention organisations and professionals.

Our current Education Officer speaks annually to over 10,000 people in schools, community groups, service organisations, businesses, nursing groups, polytechnics, and so on, as part of our Burn Prevention Programme.
