Breast Cancer Foundation (NZ)
OUR ORGANISATION
The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation is a non-government funded charitable trust that aims to reduce the number of New Zealanders who die from breast cancer and improve outcomes and quality of life for those affected by breast cancer.
In recent years the death rate from breast cancer in New Zealand has fallen by 27.8% - due mainly to more education and awareness, better treatments and a free screening programme.
OUR WORK
Public support helps The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation provide free nationwide:
- Breast health education - the Foundation's three breast health educators give over 200 free presentations in 60 towns and cities each year. And more than 250,000 free resources like the Pink Breast Book, Breast Awareness Card, Breast CD, Kia Kaha and Health & Fitness pamphlets are distributed.
- Research and grants - includes vital new research projects, essential medical equipment like ultrasound or mammography machines for breast clinics, and grants for specialist training programmes.
- Scholarships - the Foundation continues to grow its annual scholarships programme, and currently awards 15 yearly scholarships in radiation therapy and mammography.
- Public seminars - international speaker tours of New Zealand have recently included Dr John Link and Dr Susan Love from America, and Sydney medical psychologist Professor Stuart Dunn.
- Breast cancer patient registers - up-to-date patient data is collected and analysed to improve knowledge, treatments and management of resources to further improve patients long term outcomes. The Foundation currently provides funds for registers in Auckland, the Waikato and Christchurch.
- Advocacy - lending a voice to the fight for consistent and better treatments for patients nationwide is key to keeping the pressure on those who make the policies and fund them.
