Find a midwife - Independent Midwifery Service

Philosophy

To encourage you and prepare you for birth, parenthood and the changes in your lifestyle. This is achieved by discussion, education and physical examination of you and your baby. We provide you with information to assist in making informed choices regarding your care. Ila Northe, Julie Kinloch, Barb Penny, Annie Price and Rebecca Ritchie work closely together and share a common philosophy.
We attend births at home and in hospital in Napier, Hastings and surrounding areas.

Services

Total midwifery care including:

  • Pregnancy testing - and an opportunity to discuss pregnancy care options.
  • Antenatal visits: by mutual agreement at a midwifery centre or your home; frequency of visits determined according to need.
  • Education: Antenatal and parenting education is part of all visits. The midwife will inform you of education classes available
  • Labour and birth: The midwife sees her role as one of supporting you and your family. Attending you in your home or at the maternity unit.
    • Postnatal visits: are carried out on a daily basis initially and then less frequently. Women who choose or need to stay in the maternity unit will be visited by a midwife.

During your care:

  • The midwife will monitor you and the baby's progress during pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal time.
  • Your midwife will inform you at all times if she has concerns or feels it necessary to obtain another opinion (midwife, obstetrician or doctor). If you are referred to an obstetrician, depending on circumstances your care may have to be transferred to the specialist clinic. This will only occur in discussion with the specialist, yourself and the midwife.

Availability:

  • Our midwives are available 24 hours a day for births and urgent situations via the answering service (843 9686). If you have not heard from your midwife within 20 minutes please ring the answering service again.
  • Nonurgent messages are received by midwives in the early evening. If you need to speak to your midwife before this time you need to phone 843 9686 and ask for your midwife to be paged urgently.

Holidays and Time Off:

  • All midwives have planned time off each month. Your midwife will advise you about holiday time off if near your due date but may be unavailable without notice at other times.
  • If your midwife is unavailable at any time, one of the other midwives from the service will attend to you. You will be given the opportunity to meet one of the other midwives for a scheduled visit if you wish.

Standards of practice:

We are all experienced midwives. We work to the New Zealand College of Midwives Standards for Practice, Service and Education. We also participate in the College's annual review process.
