National Foundation for the Deaf Inc.
The National Foundation for the Deaf inc. (NFD inc.) is a national charitable organisation that represents arguably New Zealand's largest disability group. An estimated 420,000 New Zealanders have a hearing loss. One person in four over the age of 45 is deaf or hearing impaired.
NFD's mission is to enhance the interests, advancement, independence and well-being of all current and potential deaf and hearing-impaired people and their families.
NFD ACTIVITIES
Activities include:
- awareness raising
- campaigning / lobbying
- advocating for universal neonatal screening
- provision of educational scholarships
- maintaining a library of information
- fundraising and encouraging 'hearing-friendly' attitudes and practices.
MEMBER GROUPS
NFD works closely with many specialist groups and organisations in the field of hearing and hearing loss. Member Groups are:
- Deafness Research Foundation (DRF). Sponsors research into the causes of deafness. Also has a cochlear implant programme.
- The Hearing Association (HA). Provides information and support to people with post-lingual hearing loss.
- The New Zealand Federation for Deaf Children
- The New Zealand Acoustical Society
- The New Zealand Audiological Society
- The Society of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery
