Herpes Foundation (NZ)

OUR ORGANISATION

The New Zealand Herpes Foundation was founded in 1994 to provide support, compassion and education for people with herpes, to increase public awareness and thereby reduce ignorance and prejudice, and to improve the medical management of people with herpes simplex.

HERPES FACTS

Many people who are diagnosed with genital herpes experience shock, shame and feelings of isolation, accentuated by the myths, ignorance and stigma which society perpetuates.

Overseas studies show one in seven people (or more) have been infected by the herpes simplex virus which causes genital herpes. Many of these people do not experience recognised symptoms but can transmit the virus from time to time.

OUR WORK

To achieve our objectives, we:

  • work alongside doctors and other health professionals to encourage the best possible response to, and management of, those with herpes
  • conduct workshops on medical management
  • operate a toll free helpline (0508 11 12 13)
  • facilitate support groups throughout the country
  • provide information for people with herpes to use in discussion with partners and friends
  • distribute educational material
  • conduct public seminars and forums
  • operate a database of support groups and counsellors.
