Natural Fertility New Zealand
WHO ARE WE
Natural Fertility New Zealand is uniquely placed to support women from puberty to menopause. NFNZ Educators can teach an individual or couple in a clinic to assess their individual fertility requirements to either avoid or achieve pregnancy. We also offer an education service to facilitate learning on sexual and reproductive health to groups.
Background
Natural Fertility New Zealand Inc. (NFNZ) was launched in August 2002. It was the outcome of a review and restructuring of Natural Family Planning Incorporated, an organisation incorporated in 1974 to provide information about Natural Family Planning and Fertility Awareness.
RESOURCES AND SERVICES
NFNZ's mission statement is, "To be a leading provider of natural fertility awareness, knowledge and service in New Zealand". The service enables clients to learn how to identify the fertile time in their reproductive cycle. Clients can use the knowledge and skill gained to avoid pregnancy or to try to conceive. It is of particular note that approximately one third of our current clients are people trying to achieve conception.
Skilled teaching and support are provided on an individual basis. There is a health promotion focus in all the work, with couples being encouraged to enhance their relationship through improved communication and to nurture and protect their fertility and reproductive health.
While the largest group of people now using NFNZ services are couples trying to conceive, other main categories include:
- women breastfeeding;
- couples who have stopped using the pill and who wish to use barrier methods with knowledge of the fertility cycle;
- people who want drug-free contraception or who prefer a natural method of fertility control;
- women in transitional situations, such as menopause; and
- religious or philosophical reasons.
- A correspondence and an e-mail service are provided for those who are unable to attend a clinic or who live overseas.
In addition, NFNZ teaches about fertility and reproductive health to groups of adults and young people. These groups have included:
- schools and tertiary institutions;
- health professionals;
- antenatal groups;
- marriage preparation courses; and
- parent centres, Plunket and family group meetings.
