Parkinson's New Zealand
OUR SOCIETY
Founded in 1983, Parkinson's New Zealand helps people affected by the neurological condition known as Parkinson's disease, named after a 19th century London doctor, James Parkinson. It has contributed from monies raised, to local and overseas research into Parkinson's disease.
THE WORK OF PARKINSON'S NEW ZEALAND
Parkinson's New Zealand provides:
- Field officers who make home visits, monitor progress of the disease and ensure medication is taken correctly, advise on ways of coping, act as advocates, counsel, link members for support and run support group meetings.
- Education and information
- Library service
- Quarterly magazine
The Society is funded by donations and grants.
THE DISEASE
There are three main symptoms, each of which may vary in degree of severity: tremor (shaking), muscular rigidity and difficulties with movement. Some sufferers have only one of these others have two or all three.
