FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME - WHAT IS IT?
Fetal alcohol syndrome or fetal alcohol effects are the result of prenatal exposure to alcohol. This causes irreversible damage to the fetus, resulting in low birth weight, lack of catch-up growth, damage to the central nervous system and atypical facial features that can include smallish, slanted eyes, epicanthal folds (skin folds across the inner corner of the eye) and indistinct philtrum (the vertical groove on the upper lip). Other outcomes may include intellectual deficits, learning difficulties, language disorders, attention deficit, hyperactivity and other behavioural problems. Fetal alcohol syndrome or fetal alcohol effects can also result in cardiac and skeletal abnormalities.
FANZ
Fetal Alcohol New Zealand Trust exists to provide information and education on the subject of fetal alcohol syndrome, fetal alcohol effects and alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder. FANZ provides presentations and seminars on request and information packs.
