Quit Group (quit-smoking helpline, information and support)
Quitting smoking is hard work but you don’t have to do it alone. If you are thinking about quitting, are working to become a non-smoker, or you have relapsed - you will find support and information on the Quit Group site and through the Quitline phone support (see ‘Our services’ further below).
ABOUT US
The Quit Group is a charitable trust set up to run quit smoking programmes in New Zealand, including the national free telephone support Quitline. Our aim is to reduce the number of New Zealanders who smoke, with a particular focus on Maori smokers.
We develop and provide innovative quit smoking programmes, television, radio, and print quit campaigns as well as evidence-based tobacco control facts and figures. The programmes are funded by the New Zealand Ministry of Health.
OUR SERVICES
The Quitline – free phone (within NZ) 0800 778 778
Phone the Quitline if you would like to speak to a Quitline Advisor. The Quitline offers free telephone support, resources and low cost nicotine patches, gum and lozenges to New Zealand residents.
Quitline Advisors recognise relapse is a normal part of the quitting process and welcome calls from people who have relapsed.
Text: Txt2Quit - for quit support on your mobile phone
Website: www.quit.org.nz – visit the website for information and help with quitting; order nicotine gum, lozenges and patches; join the online quitter’s community and read quitter blogs; get online resources about quitting, including in Samoan, Tongan, Chinese and Korean languages.
Quit Cards
Through the Quit Cards programme, health providers distribute exchange cards for subsidised nicotine patches and gum to people wanting to quit smoking.
Maori services
Some 42% of Maori are current smokers and a key strategic goal for the Quit Group is to improve quit rates among Maori. Media campaigns and other promotions are developed with the aim of reaching Maori, and Maori Quitline Advisors are available to provide a quality service to Maori clients.
Pacific services
Just under 27% of Pacific peoples living in New Zealand are smokers but this group makes up a relatively small proportion of callers to the Quitline. The Quit Group employs Pacific Advisors and is developing resources and campaigns to reach the Pacific community.
OUR MISSION
To be a national leader in smoking cessation for Aotearoa/New Zealand, with effective help available for people to successfully quit smoking.
