Financial hard times: coping with stress in the recession

Many New Zealanders are suffering from stress because of the tougher economic times in 2009, and need to find out how to manage stress. “Research has shown that people who have lost their jobs or are experiencing financial hardship are at greater risk of suffering from mental health problems such as anxiety or depression,” Ministry of Health Director of Mental Health Dr David Chaplow says. The Ministry of Health has today published a brochure providing practical advice and information about support services for these people. “This brochure offers practical advice for coping with stress and looking after family members during times of financial hardship. It also provides information on the telltale signs of anxiety or depression and the available support services,” says Dr Chaplow and, “People who are adversely affected during times of adversity because of job loss or tight finances are encouraged to seek help early. There is help, if they need it.”
