Our Service
Midwives Out West provides antenatal, birth and postnatal care. When you ring looking for a midwife we will advise you on who is available to care for you around your delivery month. From this you can choose and make a booking appointment with a midwife to begin your care. During your antenatal period we ask that you visit us at our clinic. We see you for an average of 10 to 12 antenatal appointments, depending on which stage of pregnancy you are at your booking visit.
We provide full labour and delivery care at Waitakere Hospital, however we can access North Shore Hospital if the need arises or in special circumstances.
During your postnatal period we visit you at home, unless you prefer to come to our clinic. We see you and your baby a minimum of seven times during this period and usually refer you on to your well child provider between four and six weeks.
We also offer free pregnancy testing by appointment.
Location and Service Area
We are located in Henderson, West Auckland at Henderson Medical Centre. Henderson Medical Centre offers a wide range of services including general practitioners, pharmacy, physiotherapist and free pregnancy scanning at The Radiology Group right next door. We care for women in the West Auckland area, from New Lynn through to Whenuapai, West Harbour and Westgate. If you are not sure if you are within this area then just give us a call.
Our Group
There are currently four midwives available for your care at Midwives Out West. We work closely as a group so that if your midwife (Lead Maternity Carer) is unavailable due to sickness, another delivery or scheduled time off then the continuity of your care continues as normal. You will have an opportunity to meet all three midwives during your pregnancy.
Typically, each of our midwives sees about six women per month, with backup provided by the other two midwives in the practice. All four midwives are qualified and registered midwives with years of experience.
Linda Norman (Independent Midwife)
Being a midwife has always held a keen point of interest for me. I started my nursing career in 1977 in Christchurch and became a registered midwife in 1983 so have had the pleasure of supporting women through one of the most important times of their lives for more than 25 years. I have worked in the Cardiothoracic and Vascular departments at Greenlane Hospital. National Woman's Neonatal Unit and worked at both St Helens and Waitakere Hospitals as a staff midwife.
Since I became an independent midwife I have found a new passion for my work. I feel this is because of the opportunity to build relationships with women during pregnancy, birth and postnatally. This adds enormous satisfaction to my profession as I oversee the complete birth experience while learning women's individual needs. I currently live in Whenuapai. I have two daughters who have both completed school and are continuing their studies at university. It is a privilege to work alongside women and assist with a safe and happy birth experience to the best of my ability.
Helen Bryant (Independent Midwife)
I have worked as a midwife in various settings since qualifying in Scotland 1986. At present I am working within the West Auckland area as an independent midwife. I am also a registered nurse and the mother of two daughters. My interests are travelling, patchwork quilting, gardening and walking.
I really enjoy helping women and their families through the childbirth process and still the sound of a newborn baby brings great pleasure to me. My aim is for a healthy and safe pregnancy and birth. To work in conjunction with a woman and her family to provide a positive experience. I am happy to discuss the care I provide.
Rebekah Hale, now Rebekah Moore (Independent Midwife)
I have spent over two years practicing midwifery in West Auckland. Prior to this I completed five years study in zoology and psychology at Otago University and completed my Bachelor of Midwifery at Otago Polytechnic. I chose to become a midwife because I was always interested in a profession in healthcare but felt that some of the other professions in this area were to distanced from the people who they were caring for. I love working with people and I wanted to help women through one of the most exciting times in their life. Midwives tend to work more closely with women during this time and provide full continuity of care.
I have worked with Linda and Helen for the entire time I have been practising and during my training. I believe pregnancy and birth is a natural and normal experience and therefore view their care this way too, though I recognise in some cases more help is needed. Therefore, I am happy to provide a full range of care, which includes information on alternative therapies, different options during delivery including waterbirth and pain relief. No two pregnancies and births are the same therefore I am happy to discuss this with you during the course of your pregnancy. I look forward to hearing from you.
