Maternity Services Consumer Council

WHO WE ARE

The Auckland Maternity Services Consumer Council (MSCC) is a consumer based organisation made up of almost 100 community groups with an interest in maternity services provided in the Auckland region.

Free membership is open to community groups with an interest in maternity services.

Our organisation acknowledges and respects the unique and independent nature of all its member groups.

The Council recognizes the Treaty of Waitangi and actively seeks partnership with te tangata whenua.

The Council works with women of all cultures.

The Council promotes the rights of women throughout the birthing cycle.

The Council endorses the World Health Organisation's (WHO) recommendations on Appropriate Technology for Birth (1985) and Appropriate Technology Following Birth (1986).

WHAT WE BELIEVE

  • Birth is a normal life cycle event.
  • Birth is a family affair to be shared as the women and her family chooses.
  • Women and their families have the right to all information that affects their care.
  • Continuity of care from the caregivers of their choice is extremely important to women and their families.
  • Midwives are the guardians of normal childbirth and in this role act as the advocate of the birthing women.
  • Maternity care and related support services must be of a high standard and easily accessible to women.
  • Decisions relating to maternity care, policy and services must involve the participation of women consumer representatives in order to ensure that maternity services meet the needs of those who use them.

WHAT WE DO

  • Publish a quarterly newsletter which is sent out to all our member groups.
  • Meet regularly with Auckland maternity service managers to discuss issues of concern to our members.
  • Liaise with Ministry of Health managers over maternity service issues.
  • Promote the choices and availability of preconception, pregnancy, birth and postnatal options.
  • Oppose the unnecessary medicalisation of childbirth.
  • Encourage women and their families to participate fully in their pregnancy, birth and parenting experiences.
  • Provide support and information for member groups.
  • Monitor maternity care and associated support services to ensure services are responsive to consumer needs.
