Philosophy

North Waikato Independent Midwives was established in 2003 by a group of midwives who share a similar midwifery philosophy, in which women and their babies are 'the stars' and our role is providing holistic care, taking account of individual social, cultural, physical, spiritual and emotional needs.

We each maintain an independent caseload with the benefits of being supported by the other midwives in the group. Working together ensures the women we work with have access to a complete midwifery service 24 hours a day / 7 days a week. This back-up is essential if we are with another birthing woman and also to allow us to take regular time off, which is important not only for our own health and well-being, but also to ensure we do not become too tired to care for you safely. During pregnancy the women we care for will have the opportunity to meet the other midwives in the group so they become familiar with us all .

Services

All of our services are free and we cover the entire North Waikato area - from Hamilton North to Meremere and from Te Akau to Tahuna (including Ngaruawahia, Huntly & Te Kauwhata).

We have access to a variety of birthing facilities, including your own home, Birthcare Huntly and Waikato Women’s Hospital .

• No-obligation initial visit
• Information regarding choices for care
• Relaxed visits in your own home or our clinic
• Education and information including a library of books and videos
• Referral for testing relating to pregnancy (eg blood tests / ultrasound scanning)
• Labour and birthing Support (including water births)
• Support and information during the early postnatal weeks including assistance with breastfeeding
• Postnatal care for you and your baby until 4 - 6 weeks
• Prescriptions related to pregnancy and birth, including contraception
• Referral to other health practitioners & specialists
