WHO WE ARE

The Coeliac Society of New Zealand Inc. was formed in 1973 to promote the welfare of children and adults who have been diagnosed with coeliac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis. Along with support and assistance we provide new members with a manual containing information on the disease, the gluten-free diet, where to shop, recipes and helpful advice to make the transformation from gluten to gluten-free as easy as possible.

WHAT IS COELIAC DISEASE?

The coeliac condition is a type of allergy in which the lining of the intestine is damaged by gluten. Gluten is found in wheat, rye, barley and possibly oats. The condition can only be diagnosed by special tests at hospital and once the diagnosis has been made, the only treatment needed is the gluten-free diet. In this diet wheat, rye, barley and sometimes oats are completely eliminated. To be effective, the diet must be strictly and permanently adhered to, for life, and should therefore only be begun after a proven diagnosis.
