Asthma Auckland

WHO ARE WE?

Asthma Auckland (the Auckland Asthma Society Inc.) was set up in 1970 in response to rising numbers of people with asthma.

Exacerbations of asthma are triggered by things such as temperature, colds, cigarette smoke, exercise, cats, dust mites, pollen andmould. (See the everybody Asthma Centre.)

These triggers cause the breathing tubes in your lungs to tighten, swell inside and make more mucus - this means it is much harder to breathe.

OUR WORK

We offer free support and education to the one in three children and one in seven adults affected by asthma. Our efforts bring success around Auckland through a variety of platforms, including:

  • annual asthma camp for children
  • free support and advice in our offices, places of work, schools, marae, shopping malls, etc.
  • support groups for pregnant women to provide low-allergen homes
  • asthma kits in schools, and other practical help.

OUR RESOURCES

We support them with leadership and practical matters such as:

  • training, marketing, supplying promotional material
  • magazine production (7000 copies)
  • liaison with pharmaceutical and medical organisations
  • distributing free asthma emergency kits to schools
  • manage (with Unitec) New Zealand's only tertiary-qualified distance-learning COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/emphysema) and asthma courses.
