Early Menopause (NZ) Support Group
WHO WE ARE
The women in this group are all living with early menopause/premature ovarian failure. We do not bring formal qualifications to the support we provide; however, we each have our own unique experience of menopause. We understand how powerful it can be to share those experiences with others who have experienced something similar. It can help to cut through the feeling of isolation that many women experience.
ABOUT EARLY MENOPAUSE
Premature menopause is when menopause occurs before the age of 40. It can occur in very young women, even in teenagers. It is surprisingly common, occurring in one or two in every 100 women under the age of 40 and one in every 1000 women under the age of 30. It is becoming a more important issue as women delay having children.
Why is premature menopause not always diagnosed straight away?
There are many reasons why a woman can lose her periods and a doctor may wish to rule out some of those other possibilities first.
What causes it?
In most cases there is no explanation. There are some known causes (eg, permanent damage to the ovaries, autoimmune conditions, abnormal chromosomes, inherited genes). However, even for these, the process is not completely understood.
What are the health issues?
- Infertility is one of the most devastating consequences.
- Bone loss (osteoporosis) and possibly coronary heart disease caused by the drop in oestrogen levels.
- Psychological issues caused by the unexpected diagnosis that interrupts the planning of life’s goals.
OUR WORK
We aim to provide support and information to women throughout New Zealand who are living with an early menopause as a result of natural, genetic or medically-induced causes. We do this in a number of ways:
- Website - our website contains information on early menopause, additional resources, group events and a collection of members’ personal stories.
- Forum - a great place to share information and advice with women who know what you’re going through.
- Reference library - specialised books are available for members to borrow.
- Group email list - gives you direct access to relevant and timely menopause information and group news.
- Telephone contact - we have members available for a friendly chat.
- Get-togethers - members in the various regions occasionally get together for support that is more personal.
